The name is based on a poem written by Daron Malakian titled "Victims Of A Down", but their manager at the time (Shavo) thought "System" would be better.
They adapted the name from a poem that Daron wrote titled: Victims of the Down. Shavo (the bassist) thought that the word System appealed to a much broader audience than Victims, and they wanted their albums to be stored near the band Slayer.

Yes this band name was made from the guitarist daron malakians poem "victims of a down". System of a down was later made after daron and serjs band "soil" not to be confused with "SOiL"

The country Armenia (which is there heritage) was taken over by Turkey and massacred. You could basically rename the band "Government of a Down" or they were originally gonna name it "Victims of a Down"
