alhambra literally means "red" in arabic - referring to the fortress's color.
The Alhambra comes from the Arabic and means the red. Many think that this comes from the red flair of the torches or the red bricks from which the Alhambra was surrounded. There are many other ideas of where the Alhambra got its name from. Such as from the finder of the palace...
The Alhambra was built by the Arabic-speaking Nasrid Kingdom in southern Spain and the original name for the complex was al-Qal3a al-Hamraa' (القلعة الحمراء), meaning "the Red Fortress", in reference to the local red clay. However, it became colloquially called as simply al-Hamraa' (الحمراء) or "the Red one". When the Nasrid Kingdom was destroyed, the name of the fortress was "Spanishified" to from al-Hamraa' to the familiar name "Alhambra" of today.
