The Buddha (Siddartha Gautama) was born in the kingdom of Kapilvastu (now part of Nepal), and was the son of a tribal chieftain. He was brought up as a prince, wealthy and well-educated. His quest for truth led him to desert his home and rich lifestyle and become a pilgrim.
