This is one reason why the Japanese bombed Pearl harbor; it was key to a future invasion in America. 3: Even if the Japanese won, it would be a pyrric victory (they would win, but lose many soldiers) In a case where almost all of the Pacific is in their grasp, starting a war with America would weaken the Japanese army significantly, causing the Japanese power over its colonies to weaken. This could lead to rebellions in Pacific areas such as China, Korea, and Singapore; many Japanese colonies resented the Japanese presense in their territory.
