Roman is an epithet first commonly used in England after the protestant revolt to describe the Catholic Church. It is rarely used by the Catholic Church. Catholicism began with Our Blessed Lord appointing St. Peter as the first Pope in Jerusalem, Israel (see St. Matthew 16:17-19). Then Sts. Peter and Paul took the faith to Rome where the papacy has remained ever since.
Christianity began in Judaea, currently in the country called Israel. Catholicism is the modern day continuation of the early Christian Church.
Catholicism began in Palestine (Israel) and quickly spread to the entire known world.

It started around Jerusalem in the Middle East where Jesus founded the Catholic faith when he said "And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it" (Matthew 16:18).
Catholicism began in Jerusalem on Pentecost Sunday in about the year 33 AD when the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles and gave them strength and conviction to begin preaching the Gospel.

around 32 AD..when Christ died and rose to Heaven

The Church actually had its birthday on Pentecost Sunday when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles and gave them the courage to begin preaching the Gospel.
Catholicism started on Pentecost Sunday in about the year 33 AD with the descent of the Holy Ghost, giving the Apostles the strength and conviction to begin preaching the Gospel.

Catholic Christianity began:

  • When the Virgin Mary said about Christ to Gabriel, "Be it done to me according to your word" - she was the first Catholic.
  • When Christ said that He would build His Church on the person of Peter.
  • At the Last Supper when Christ gave Himself to His apostles under the form of bread and wine as an unbloody sacrifice.
  • At the crucifixion when Christ gave Himself to His apostles as a very bloody sacrifice.
  • At the resurrection, when Christ rose from the dead.
  • At Pentecost, commonly also referred to as "The Birth of the Church".

In short - Catholic Christianity began with Christ in Israel.

Catholic AnswerThere is no "Roman Catholic Church", it's just Catholic, not Roman Catholic. Roman is an epithet first commonly used in England after the protestant revolt to describe the Catholic Church. It is never used by the official Catholic Church. Nor, for that matter, is there a Catholic, or Roman Catholic denomination. The Catholic Church is the only Christian Church started by Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ, and as it is His Body (see St. Paul), there can be only one.

.

The Church was considered to have been born from the side of Christ when the soldier opened his side with a lance and blood and water flowed out. It was formally started at Pentecost, fifty days later, when the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles to confirm them in all truth and lead them to preach to and baptize all nations.

.

The Catholic faith emanated from God from the beginning of time, and was established on earth definitively from the side of Jesus Christ on the cross outside of Jerusalem when He side was pierced by a spear, around 33 A.D.. Then it was shown to the world at Pentecost with the coming of the Holy Spirit, fifty-three days later.

from The Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition, English translation 1994

766 The Church is born primarily of Christ's total self-giving for our salvation, anticipated in the institution of the Eucharist and fulfilled on the cross. "The origin and growth of the church are symbolized by the blood and water which flowed from the open side of Christ as he slept the sleep of death upon the cross that there came forth the 'wondrous sacrament of the whole Church.'" Sacrosanctum concilium 5) As Eve was formed from the sleeping Adam's side, so the church was born from the pierced heart of Christ hanging dead on the cross. (Cf. St. Ambrose, In Luc. 2, 85-89: J.P. Migne, ed., Patrologia Latina {Paris: 1841-1855} 15, 1666-1668)

Protestant AnswerActually the Catholic Church (Catholic meaning 'universal' ) is what is described above, and not the Roman Catholic Church. Before the Reformation the Roman Catholic Church did not exist as such. Only after the Reformation when distinction had to be drawn between the Eastern Orthodox Churches, the new Protestant Churches and the remnants of the old Catholic Church did that latter Church become known as the 'Roman' Catholic Church as, unlike the Orthodox and Protestant Churches it continued to be ruled by the pope based in Rome, whereas the other Churches did not accept papal authority.

It started in Rome.So the word Roman catholic.

Actually, the Church started on Pentecost Sunday in about the year 33 AD in Jerusalem and then began to spread to the rest of the world, Rome included.

The Catholic Church historically traces it's roots all the way to Jesus via apostolic succession (i.e., through the apostles and their successors, the bishops). The only other Christian body that has retained apostolic succession are the Orthodox churches. "Churches" is used in the plural on purpose as the main distinction between the Orthodox and Catholics is that the Orthodox stop their hierarchy at the local bishop's level (a.k.a., the patriarch's) level. The Catholic Church, however, has a higher level in the Pope, who has authority over other bishops not like a dictator, but rather like the older brother who was given additional responsibilities in taking care of the house while the parents are away.

Notice that I have not used the word "Roman" yet. The reason why is because the word can have different meanings depending upon it's context. For example, in the United States, it typically means the actual Catholic Church. However, officially the word "Roman" is not used by the Catholic Church herself. She simply refers to herself as the Catholic Church. One reason is because the word "Roman" is used in a different context officially to describe one of the many liturgical rites the Church has, the Roman rite (aka, the Latin rite).

The main reason however, is because the Catholic Church does not see herself as one among many different Christian denominations. Rather, she sees herself as THE Catholic Church who existed since the time of the apostles which was well before any of the "denominations" splintered off starting in the 1500s with Martin Luther, John Calvin, etc ...

Roman Catholic AnswerIn ancient Palestine, in and near Jerusalem: the Church was considered to have been born from the side of Christ when the soldier opened his side with a lance and blood and water flowed out, at Calvary outside Jerusalem. It was formally started at Pentecost, fifty days later, when the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles to confirm them in all truth and lead them to preach to and baptize all nations, starting in Jerusalem.

The Catholic Church, as we know it today, originated from the Great Schism of 1054, when the Christian Church split to form the Catholic Church in the west and the Orthodox Church in the east. Both Churches claim to be the true, original Church, so naturally the Catholic Church says it was founded in Jerusalem, but it may be more accurate to say that the Catholic Church started in Rome.
