For all practical purposes it ended when Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865. Some fighting took place in Texas and other parts of the US, however these battles had no effect on the outcome which was the surrender of Confederate military forces in April of 1865.
