The US Civil War took place between the Union military forces and the southern Confederate states.

The Union forces are frequently referred to as the North and the southern Confederate forces are often referred to as the South.

It happened in the across America from April 12,1861 to April 9, 1865. The Civil War was fought in thousands of different places all other the US, from southern Pennsylvania to Texas; from New Mexico to the Florida coast. The majority of the fighting took place in the states of Virginia and Tennessee. It began to unfold when the Confederates bombarded Union Fort Sumter in the Charleston, South Carolina harbor. For all practical purposes it ended when Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865. Some fighting took place in Texas and other parts of the US, however these battles had no effect on the outcome which was the surrender of Confederate military forces in April of 1865.
