During the American Civil War, the Battle of Wilson's Creek took place around Wilson's Creek, some ten miles southwest of Springfield, Missouri. In August of 1861, Union forces clashed with Confederate-loyal Missourians from the state militia in the first major battle of the western theater of the Civil War. A Union defeat here led to a rise of fortunes for Missourians who supported the South and suggested that the war was not going to be a short one.
