1- People believed that having more family and friends would make everyone much more happier. So they would say "the more the merrier" when they wanted more people to be there with them.

2- Slavery... They would use this term for when you were richer you would have more slaves and everyone would look up as in you were the top dog. So the rich would say "the More the merrier" as in "the more slaves, the better it is"

the 1st term still lives but the second one was terminated after realization came to see that slavery was bad.
