The first Earth Hour took place in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. It was an idea developed by newspaper The Sydney Morning Herald and WWF. For that first ever Earth hour, 2.2 million homes and businesses in the Sydney area switched off their lights for the period of one hour. The following year, 2008, saw Earth Hour go global, when an estimated 50 million people, businesses and landmarks turned off their lights for an hour.

Why was Earth Hour started?Earth hour started because if we just turn off our electricity for an hour, we can save lots of power. Some people think we use so much power that we should make a difference. They wanted to make a change. So they invented earth hour. That's why there's earth hour. Turning off power for an hour can save a whole lot of it! Read the answers below for more details. Why should we turn off our lights?Remember, light is heat. There are polar bears in the north of Canada and they need icebergs to land on when they are tired of swimming. If they don't land, they will die. Light can melt the icebergs. Also, sometimes we use too much power. We waste it so we want to save more power. But flashlights are okay. If we turn off our lights, does that mean the Hospital lights will be off too?No. We just TRY to turn off as many lights as we can. If we seriously need them, we leave them on. Even offices and buildings will have their lights on and their computers. It's just at home. So in your house, your lights should be off. If you also can't do it at home, then do it. Only use power if it's neccecarily. What time does it start? Here in Canada and the US, it starts at 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM. I don't know about the other places so you might need to ask somebody. Each year, it's in either at the end of March or at the beginning of April. It will be at nigh time because if it's at AM, you're awake and you wouldn't use power! We do it in a time that's dark. It's night, so what can we do in the dark?

I know it's night and it says in the answer above. You can open windows so it's brighter and you can play Board Games. You can invite a friend and play hide and seek in the dark! You can sleep. You can go out to look at the stars or just play. There's lots of stuff to do instead of using power such as playing on the computer, watching television, playing your DS or PSP or using lights.
