The General Slocum left from Manhattan, New York. It was picking a group of people from a Lutheran Church (mostly women and children and their neighbors and friends) at 9:00 AM-the people who boarded General Slocum were from Little Germany in Manhattan. Some were German immigrants and some were half German.
They have different expressions. 'Shall I leave' is a permission where as "Should I leave" is an hesitating denial to leave that particular person.
