The Loyalists, after the American Revolution, were seen as traitors by the Patriots, and once the Treaty of Paris was signed. They had a number of options, but only two were really considered:
1. They could flee America before they were caught by the Patriots in the few months after the war. This was probably their safest option, provided that they did it quickly and without fail.
2. They could risk staying in America, with the potential to be "tarred and feathered" while Anti-Loyalist sentiment still existed. "Tarring and Feathering" was a brutal process of being enveloped in hot tar and feathers (as the name suggests), leaving essentially no dignity for the victim. As an added bonus, the tar, upon being removed, typically would peel off skin, which was burned from the initial tarring. This was the fate which former Loyalists would have to worry about soon after the war.
