The term Hindu was coined by the Persian invaders who pronounced Sindhu (river) as Hindu. This term was used for the people who lived in the Indian sub-continent or beyond the Sindhu river. It was more of a geographical identification rather than the name of a religion.

The better term for "Hinduism" (the religion) is Sanatana Dharma or the eternal law. Additionally, you'll not see any instance of the word "Hindu" appearing in the Vedas (scriptures).

Hinduism gets its name from the way Persians and Central Asians pronounced the name of River Indus - 'Hendu' (Indian pronunciation - Sindhu). Punjab and the Frontier Province of Pakistan with its seven rivers was known as 'Hapta-Hendu' to Zoroastrians (Indian pronunciation - Sapta Sindhu). So, 'Hindu' religion would be that of people living around River Indus and farther South and East. Farther West, the Greeks knew Indians as the 'Indoi' to create the name 'India'. The language of these people became 'Hindi' and their land became 'Hindustan' (the land of Hindus). The Central Asians, Russians, Chinese, all call people of India as 'Hindi' or 'indi' (of India), depending on how they can pronounce it.
