George Vancouver named the mountain for British diplomat Alleyne Fitzherbert, 1st Baron St Helens on October 20, 1792, as he and his crew were the first Europeans to see it.

Mount St. Helens is named after the the British diplomat Lord St Helens, who was a friend of explorer George Vancouver who made a survey of the area in the late 18th century.
