General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia.
The surrender took place in the home of Wilmer McLean who had fled the seat of war in 1861 after the Union and Confederate Armies clashed on property he owned near Manassas Junction, Virginia. This battle was known as the First Battle of Bull Run or First Manassas.
