On 6 August 1945, Colonel Paul Tibbets piloted the B-29 Enola Gay of the 393rd Bombardment Squadron from the Mariana Island of Tinian, launched from the North Field Airbase, approximately six hours flight time south of the Japanese Islands and dropped Little Boy on the city of Hiroshima.

Three days later, 9 August 1945, Major Charles Sweeney piloted the B-29 Bockscar from the same airfield to drop Fat Man on the city of Nagasaki.
