long ago, there were ancestors of the horse that were very small, and had four toes intead of one hoof on each foot. As this creature evolved, it split off into the horse and unicorn. Over time, the toes became less and less, and the creature's lion-like tails have become more, well, horse-like.
Horse's toes have become one solid hoof, and the two boney bumps on their skulls remain under their flesh, and not visible. Unicorns, however, still have two-toed hooves, and the two bumps of bone now stick out of their forehead, and are twisted together and end at a sharp point, creating a horn. *One of my horses has a bony bump sticking out of the left side of his forehead, one of the bones that makes up a unicorn's horn!* Unicorns still had their lion-like tails, and are a bit smaller than domestic horses.
Some people believe that the unicorns, if they did not go extinct (like other horse ancestors) juring the middle ages, have evolved more than that by now, and have one solid hoof on each foot, and true horse tails. They may even be bigger and stronger than domestic horses, and come in more colours than just white. But the paintings and sculptures of unicorns that come from ancient civilizations show unicorns as they were discribed in paragraph #2. And we cannot tell if they have gone extinct or evolved, because if they ARE alive, Nobody can find them.
The fact that they cannot be located has caused people to think they are "magical" and imaginary creatures. But the paintings from long ago of people meeting them, and the fact that unicorns were a mideaval symol, say exactly the ooposite...
The unicorn is a mythical, so has never "appeared".
The first stories of unicorns can be traced back some 5000 years to the Asian countries, particularly China. Chinese unicorns and Japanese unicorns were quite different. legend has it that Chinese Emperor Fu Hsi was the first to "see" a unicorn.
Legends always have their origin in truth, no matter how tenuous (dragons are a prime example of this), so there is little doubt that a sighting, somewhere, generated the myth. It could well be that a horse with a malformation was sighted. Or even, a wild horse breaking through the forest had its head entangled in a branch. Imagine - in the fading twilight, the silhouette of a magnificent horse cantering away with a branch positioned so as to look like a horn from the side or the back - it is very easy to see how such myths can be generated.
It is not entirely certain and there are several suggestions. Some have said the legend originates from Narwhals while others have suggested it comes from an antelope called the oryx. Still others point to the possibility of now-extinct animals such as elasmotherium, a relative of rhinoceros.
The unicorn can be found anywhere in the world with the exception of the arctic ect.
The word unicorn comes from the Latin words unus, meaning "one", and cornu, meaning "horn". When you put the two words together you get the word unicorn, or "one horn". Hope this helps!! :)
