To keep it simple, the Waler was bred by us Australian's in the 1800's. They were used as our war mounts in WW1 and in some of WW2
Breeds that created them include the Thoroughbred, Arabian, Cape Horse, Timor Pony and in some cases, Clydesdale and Percheron.
After WW1, majority of Walers were sold to the English as Australian troops couldn't bring them home. They were also sold to India.
Despite some British people trying to claim the Waler, it'll always be our Aussie's who bred them.
Hope this answers your question
The horse evolved over a period of 65 million years over the continents of Eurasia and North America. They started out as fox sized, multi - toed browsers who ate leaves, shrub and bark. As the forests of that time began to give way to open grassland, the horse began to change into a larger, faster, single-toed grazer that could digest the tough grasses and see predators from a distance. Once humans discovered that horses could be used for more than just food they began to tame them down for riding and working the land. Truly wild horses died out in North America shortly after the last great ice age and were reintroduced by Spanish explorers in the 1500's and by Vikings to the Newfoundland area in 1000's. There is only one truly wild horse left in the world, the Przewalski, all others are considered feral.

The Fraser Island Brumby is the descendant of the Walers used in WW1 and 2. The Waler is also known as the Australian horse and a mixed breed created for use in the wars.
A waler is a horse which was developed over years to achieve a horse which was strong and hardy enough for the Australian climate, have enough stamina to be ridden long distances and the ability to work the fields. They were used for the Australian Light Horse in WW1. They are a combination of several breeds which were introduced to Australia during 1788, those being Thoroughbred, Arabian, Suffolk Punch, Clydesdale, Shire, Cleveland Bay, Welsh Cob, Coaching breeds, Hackney, Percheron, Timor Pony and many of the British native ponies.
