Once old enough, a stem will grow and make a cluster of flowers. Most gardeners remove this stem because the plants energy will go to making seeds. The flowers will start to shrink and wither, and a growth shaped like a smooth bud will grow. This is the seed. The seed is the color of white onion. Once it is fully grown,it will fall off when you gently nudge it. (Tip. If you have whole onions that are starting to spoil or sprout in you pantry, plant it in your garden. The bulb wont be good, but you can crush and boil the stalks for delicious onion broth. The stalks are woody when cooked ,so remove before serving.)
