The Italian language grew out of the interaction between speakers of the ancient Latin language and speakers of ancient local languages. That's why the Italian of one region is different from the Italian of another. As an example, Latin interacted with the Etruscan language in much of northern Italy. As another example, it interacted with the Greek language in some pockets along coastal Italy.
