These terriers are named for the man who bred them in the first place, Reverend John Russell of Devonshire, England. Terriers are bred to "go to ground" that is, to chase prey right down into the prey's burrow- thus the name terrier from terra, the Latin for earth or ground.

Dobermans and schnauzers are named after the German counts who originated the breeds. Labrador retrievers and Shetland sheepdogs are named for their territory of origin. Pitbulls are so named because they were bred to fight eachother in enclosures called pits.

The Jack Russells I have known were yappy liittle crap machines that should have been ground up and put in Chinese food.

They are called Jack Russels, I believe, because Jack Russel was the man who let their breed exist!
