Cockatiels are native to Australia, occurring mostly in the eastern half of the continent and the north. They are rarer in Tasmania than in the other eastern mainland states. There are small populations of cockatiels around the settled areas of Western Australia, particularly Perth, mostly because of accidental (or deliberate) releases from aviaries.

Cockatiels are now kept as pets all around the world as they have a good temperament and are easily tamed.

In cages, mostly, I would think. Or, if they are like the larger birds in my house, wandering around on top of them, down the stairs and throughout the building, generally causing trouble. But before they understood why the caged bird shrieked? They come from Australia, there are still flocks of them there. They are nothing like endangered. They are prevalent. Here in California, we have flocks of mitred conures--a larger, more parrotlike species. They shriek pretty loudly themselves; on occasion, our birds scream back. I can only imagine the sound of the sky over Sydney. Cockatiels are far from the only wild species of psittacidae thereover wreaking havoc overhead.

The name generally comes from the owner.

If you are referring to how it's species name came about, their name is derived from a dutch word "Kakatielje" which mean "little cockatoo."

Cockatiels breed in a nesting box. If you want to breed cockatiels, you will need to buy one from a pet store.

Does a male cockatiel have an actual penis?

No. The only birds that have penises are some duck and goose species. Cockatiel reproductive organs are located inside the bird's body. If a male cockatiel has a fleshy lump near or in his cloaca, he may have a tumor. You should consult your avian veterinarian if you see anything unusual on your bird's body.
