Earthquakes most commonly occur along fault lines, or divisions within the Earth's crust. The Earth's crust is divided into giant plates, which move incredibly slowly (only a couple of inches a year) as they rotate around the Earth's molten core. Earthquakes occur when these plates interact with one another, such as when they collide.

Most earthquakes occur in the same places as volcanoes: the ring of fire and plate boundaries. This is, of course, because it is the movement of the plate boundaries that cause the earthquake.

You will get earthquakes in other places occasionally: they are rarely big enough to be felt.

earth's crust (the outer layer of the planet) is made up of several pieces, called plates. The plates under the oceans are called oceanic plates and the rest are continental plates. The plates are moved around by the motion of a deeper part of the earth (the mantle) that lies underneath the crust. These plates are always bumping into each other, pulling away from each other, or past each other. The plates usually move at about the same speed that your fingernails grow. Earthquakes usually occur where two plates are running into each other or sliding past each other.
