They have a thick layer of fat that grows when they can find food, but when food is scarce they feed off the fat layer. During the coldest months in the desert (winter) they are active during the day, but during the hotter months (summer) they are active at night. Fat sand rats also have burrows that they live in. During the day in the summer months they retreat to these burrows out of the sun. They rarely drink large amounts of water. They get all the water they need from their diet of salt bush plants and leguminous plants or insects if they can't find the plants and from licking the morning dew.
