Hibiscus are pretty cosmopolitan plants and will grow in most places that have temperate, tropical or sub-tropical climates. In Sub-tropical and tropical climates they are normally attached by Mealy Bug to the point that the plants can look as if they are covered with snow! The plants recover after the infestations, but are normally disfigured and require severe pruning to rectify the damage.

Hibiscus are not frost tolerant!

Alternative answers:

They do grow in Florida, and many locations zone 9 or south. The best they can take of cold weather is 40 degrees f. Like many flowering tropical plants they require 6 hours of sun a day to bloom.

Hibiscus plants grow best in area's with high humidity. They are very hearty plants, but the disadvantages are that the roots attract termites. So it's not a good idea to plant them close to your house or buildings.
