The most common brake light switch is a mechanicalswitch, and they are usually located behind/below the dashboard, near, and above the brake pedal arm. Sometimes they are mounted on a metal dashboard brace, and occassionally, some even mount/"ride" on the brake pedal arm itself!
Also, most of the mechanical types are operated by a plunger extending out of the switch, and in contact with a fixed, or moving, part of the bracket or brake pedal arm.
The other type of brake light switch is a hydraulically operated switch and is usually located inside the engine compartment, and attached to [screws into] the brake master cylinder, or a junction block in the brake system hydraulic tubing which splits the brake lines off to go to the wheel slave cylinders.
