There are 22 species of Kangaroo Rats, as well as many more subspecies, found in the western and southwestern parts of the United States. Most species are found in the arid regions of California. You can find some species of the Kangaroo rats in the Sierra Nevada, Cascade, and Rocky Mountains from southern Canada down to central Mexico. Kangaroo rats can be found in open desert scrub, open grasslands, washes, sandy soils, and creosote flats.
