Missionaries usually come from their particular church or denomination. An individual might decide to become a missionary after they feel the burden of responding to their religion's call for missionaries (for example, a Christian's call from The Bible can be found in Mark 16:15 "And he (Jesus) said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature"). They are then sent from and supported by their particular church or denomination to go into the world with the "mission" of sharing their faith and persuading others to join them in their faith. Often missionary work is accompanied by humanitarian work, such as caring for the sick (a medical missionary), teaching, running orphanages, etc. There is a link that can provide more information on missionaries on the bottom of this page entitled "What is a missionary?", or you can copy and paste this link:http:/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missionary. Also, here is a definition of a missionary from Dictionary.com: mis⋅sion⋅ar⋅y /ˈmɪʃəˌnɛri/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [mish-uh-ner-ee] Show IPA noun, plural -ar⋅ies, adjective --noun Also, mis⋅sion⋅er. 1. a person sent by a church into an area to carry on evangelism or other activities, as educational or hospital work. 2. a person strongly in favor of a program, set of principles, etc., who attempts to persuade or convert others. 3. a person who is sent on a mission.
