A pilgrim is a person on a pilgrimage, that is, a spiritual quest of some sort. Usually, they are visiting some holy landmarks (ie Mecca in Islam, Jerusalem in Christianity and other religions, etc.).
The pilgrims from colonial times were coming to the "New World" in a search of religious freedom, so they weren't visiting as much as they were settling somewhere where they wouldn't be persecuted for their beliefs.

The village of Walsingham in Norfolk is famous for shrines dedicated to the Virgin.
