Plankton is able to protect itself. There is one form of plankton called dinoflagellates. Dinoflagellates have 2 forms of protecting themselves from predators. One way is they have an armored shell, and the other is that they have body spikes. The body spikes release a harmful chemical that scares predators away. There is no such thing is a creature being too small to protect itself.
