Usually there are three wires. Two are in a connector that snaps into the top of the housing. A large red "charge" cable should bolt onto the rear lug with a nut. Negative battery cable should be removed until wiring is done, and do not let this contact any metal other than the lug. I believe the 2 wire connector only feeds the voltage gauge, and the red charge cable runs to the battery.
