You have to take the entire dashboard out and the heater core is located behind the radio. It looks like a radiator. You need to take all screws out and this is at the least 4 hours or more job; just had mine replaced and the part itself costs 400 dollars.
The heater core is under the dash. Open the hood an look at the firewall behind the back head there are 2 hoses ther plug into the heatercore. left and right

Im doing the same thing to my mitsi as well and i am just going by trial and error ...but i have found out that the heater core is behind the centre console so the whole thing will needed to be removedthen its just a matter of removing the 3 bolts holding the heater core in place and working it out of behind the steel centre console brakets. Or you can remove the whole dash...which is a huge job
The heater core is under the lower right dash insulator panel and behind the glove box in the heater core housing

There would only be a rear heater core if there was a rear heater, which I don't believe was an option.
well this is an easy thing to do but i would hope its not in the winter or youd be frozen..now what you do is you take the 2 hoses coming from the firewall that mount to the heater core separate them from the core.now you get a plastic or metal tube and fit it inside each hose fitting them together and make sure you use clamps and tighten them and bam there you go...
