In 1939 Dorothy came walking down the yellow brick road. She stole hearts and minds with her blue and white checkered dress and wholesome appeal. The movie was based on a fairy tale written in 1900 by Frank Baum called THe Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Judy Garland's Wizard of Oz won two academy awards and still remains a movie that appears every year around Halloween. Classic, beloved movies have inspired Halloween costumes that never go out of style. Whether you're at a party of passing candy to trick-or-treaters, you're bound to see a Dorothy or one of the gang from Wizard of Oz.

However, you don't need to spend big bucks to become your favorite Wizard of Oz character. Many of the costumes can be replicated at a fraction of the price. Thrift stores are a perfect place to search for dowdy, old-fashioned clothes like the characters in the movie.

For Dorothy, look for an apron-style dress, preferably checkered print. Blue and white checkers would be best, but if you couldn't find one you could always paint blue squares on a white sheet or dress. Ruby red slippers can also be fashioned with a pair of heels, spray paint, and glitter.

Scarecrow- Men's clothing at thrift stores is always abundant. Look for baggy, color-coordinated items. Don't forget to add straw to the clothing. You can use a mop for the hair painted yellow and covered with a hat.

Glinda the Good Witch. For GLinda, any type of prom dress or princess outfit would work just fine. Don't forget your wand.

The Bad Witch. Look for a black dress or long jacket. Make sure to where striped socks and put your hair in uneven braids. Grab a broom and have a great night.

Of course you can't forget the Munchkins and the Lollypop kids. Dress up as an elf and add a giant sized lollipop for effect. Use your imagination. Happy hunting
