I'm not sure if this works on all Windows versions but on Vista near the 'Log Off' there is a button called 'Switch User'. Click this and it will enable you to switch user accounts without logging off your username.

If you are stopping a session to allow someone else to use the computer, you should click on the X in the corner of the page you are on. This will close out anything you are looking at and protect sensitive information.

Stand by in windows is where the computer is still turned on and will resume when you want it to. Hibernate is where it saves your session (keeps what you are doing, yes everything) and then turns off the computer. When it is turned back on your session will be restored.
