You most definently need to remove the fan guard. Then from underneath, you should be able to reach the pump. It is a tight fit...... I had to replace both alternator and Power Steering pump at the same time. Knowing the limitation of movement I decided to make life easier, and I really glad I did. I removed everything between the headlights from the bumper all the way back to the fan (inclusively) now I can reach every thing without fear of tying myself in a not.
