Google gets its imagery from a variety of sources such as commercial satellite providers such as DigitalGlobe and GeoEye as well as from government and local agencies. Once the imagery is acquired by Google, it next has to be processed into the format and coordinate system of Google Earth's databases. Then it goes through a quality control process and processing system before getting distributed to the Google Earth database servers. This is one reason you usually do not find any imagery newer than about 6 months in Google Earth.

What is the source of Google Earth?
Google Earth's imagery comes from a variety of sources such as aerial photos and commercial satellite imagery. Some of the imagery even comes from kites and air balloons. Google buys or licenses the use of this imagery. Some of the imagery is given to Google by city or state governments. The primary sources for Google's satellite imagery comes from GeoEye and DigitalGlobe.
When will Google earth 6 be more current?
Google Earth 6 is the most current version of Google Earth. As for the satellite imagery and layers hosted by Google, the same data appears on Google Earth 5 and Google Earth 6 alike. In fact, Google Maps for the most part shows the same satellite imagery as that in Google Earth but sometimes the imagery updates for one is slightly ahead of the other. Is historical imagery coming to street view in Google Earth?
Not yet for Google Earth. Google recently created historical imagery for Street View on Google Maps. If historical imagery is available then a clock and date will be displayed in the upper left of the map.

If imagery for a given area in Google Maps is older than 2007 you must wait for an update in that area.If imagery is more recent than 2007 Google Maps doesn't provide a 'historical imagery' view as Google Earth does. In that case you have to download/install Google Earth to see old/historical imagery.
