It started at Wallsend on the river Tyne, on the eastern outskirts of present day city of Newcastle upon Tyne. It run through the English county of Cumbria via Carlisle and to the shore of the Solway Firth, which marks the border between England and Scotland. Its end on the western side in unknown. Its was near the village of Bowness-on-Solway. Defensive turrets and structures which have been called midfortets continued further south along the Cumbrian coast to Maryport.
