Coal is mined in Newcastle, New South Wales. The first coal was discovered back in 1791 by a group of convict escapees. For obvious reasons, they did not notify the authorities. British soldier, Lieutenant John Shortland, found a coal seam while looking for the escapees in 1797, and coal has been mined there ever since. Copper was also mined at Newcastle in the middle of the nineteenth century.
