African, Asian, Caribbean and European countries are the sources of Suriname's medicine.

Specifically, Asian and European approaches to medicine predominate in the country's capital, coastal and larger cities. The strongest European influences originate in the country's former mother country, the European Kingdom of the Netherlands. The strongest Asian influences originate in the south Asian country of India and in the southeast Asian country of Indonesia.

African influences from the cultures of modern-day Ghana may be found throughout the country. They are supplemented by indigenous influences in pockets throughout the country's vast rain forest interior. These influences come from the descendants of Suriname's original settlers from the nearby Caribbean islands.
