Best Answer

Usually in the back, towards the top.

IMPROVED:

Depending on the architecture, it typically goes towards the 'rear' of the computer (recognizeable by the large number of 'ports' for plugs and slots), inside a small bracket at the top. Most cases have a hole cut here for fans on the PSU to vent.

In some unusual case designs such as older LBA boards, and newer Rackmounts, MicroATX, MicroITX, NanoITX, PicoITX, NanoBGA, and similar ultra-small desktops, the power supply may fit on the bottom flat portion of the case, or in the rear bottom.

In some large 'Cube' cases, the PSU is actually an external unit and sets ontop of the case, and feeds cables down into the case.

In laptops, it is usually in the rear or side of the case, located where the power cable connects, but this may vary (such as in Apple computers)

Location of computer power supply in motherboard?

The power supply is usually always located at the top of the computer tower, to the back. Whats easy to find is whatever your power cord from the wall plugs into on the back of your computer, is your power supply box. From there, the power is reduced and sent throughout the computers hardware. (You'll also see that its the box with all the wires are coming out of, inside the computer)

What is fuction of power supply?

The power supply makes the computer run, without any type of power supply it would be impossible to run a computer. The mains power supply for a laptop and the power supply unit of a desk top, both convert the high AC voltage from the mains power and convert it to low voltage DC, for the electronics of a computer to use.

What hardware system do you first assume is at fault?

The obvious answer would be the Power Supply Unit (PSU). This starts the computer and without it nothing can work. On the other hand if you have a faulty mother board or RAM, the computer would switch on but nothing would be shown on the screen. The PSU is found on the highest part of the tower. Also check the the switch (if it has) is switched on, and that the power supply cable (the 3 pin one) works.

How do components get power?

A computer's power supply unit provides all needed voltages for the components of a computer that are internal. Externals either draw power from the USB bus (which in turn gets it's power from the aforementioned PSU or a Hub with a power supply) OR have their own internal power supply with a cable.
