ANSWER: Air pollution can occur anywhere but its effects are most noted in areas of high urban development (cities) especially where local climatic conditions and topography combine to hold pollutants in the area. The sources of air pollution are transportation (cars and buses), industry, and domestic sources (comfort heating and cooking). Many developing countries have a combination of pollution sources and inadequate legislative controls which impacts air quality negatively. Many of these same countries have an inadequate supply of clean fuel (natural gas) or clean power (hydroelectric or nuclear) to meet their needs.

Mainly coastal pollution from maritime oil spills which threaten the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the coastal areas in general including large fisheries up to 200 nautical miles offshore, air pollution from the use of combustion engines for surface transport and to a lesser extent, manufacturing. Severe droughts can increase the amount of dust in the atmosphere. Other environmental problems include the clearing of land that loosens the soil which is then washed away during times of flood.
