Lactic Acid Fermentation
Lactic acid fermentation takes place in the cytoplasm of cells. It is an anaerobic process that converts pyruvate into lactic acid to regenerate NAD+ for glycolysis to continue in the absence of oxygen.
Lactic acid fermentation is a type of fermentation that sometimes occurs in humans. This process occurs in muscle cells when the oxygen supply is limited during intense exercise, leading to the production of lactic acid as a byproduct.
In animals, fermentation produces lactate or lactic acid as a byproduct, while in yeast, fermentation produces ethanol and carbon dioxide. Lactic acid fermentation does not produce energy as efficiently as ethanol fermentation, which is why animals primarily rely on it during high-intensity exercise when oxygen is limited. Fermentation in animals occurs in muscle cells, while yeast fermentation takes place in yeast cells.
In animal cells, the type of anaerobic respiration that occurs is called lactic acid fermentation. During this process, glucose is converted into energy (ATP) in the absence of oxygen, resulting in the production of lactic acid as a byproduct. This mechanism is particularly utilized in muscle cells during intense exercise when oxygen supply is limited. Lactic acid can accumulate and contribute to muscle fatigue.
The two types of fermentation are alcoholic fermentation, and lactic-acid fermentation. Alcoholic fermentation, occurs in yeast and other single celled organisms. Lactic-acid fermentation occurs in muscle cells. Your muscles use it to create energy when there is not enough oxygen to use for normal respiration.

Alcoholic Fermentation does not occur in human bodies but rather in plant cells when they do not receive adequate amounts of the necessary amounts of nutrients and minerals. Lactic fermentation however occurs in human cells located in the cytoplasm after glycolysis.
