The Bible gives us a very simple and yet satisfying answer to the question: when we are dead, it is like we are asleep in the sense that we cannot do anything. (Psalm 13:3) We are simply dead. We don't go anywhere. There is the very popular belief that the soul lives on after death, but the Bible teaches that a man IS a soul, not that he POSSESSES a soul. (Genesis 2:7, fn.) This is comforting because it rules out the possibility of a place of eternal torture. But this doesn't mean it's the end. The Bible goes even further in saying that there will be a resurrection in which "all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out."-John 5:28, 29. What a wonderful hope! -All quotes taken from the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures, 2013 Revised Edition

Answer 2:

Souls return to the Primary Reality of Spirit. For ample evidence of this, simply explore the plethora of near-death experiences that are explained on the Net, in posts and in videos.

There is a seven-plane paradigm that is found in the major religions of Catholicism, Islam, Judaism, and Hinduism, and the minor religions of Hermeticism and Gnosticism. The basic idea is that after death souls gravitate to one of those seven planes, depending upon their spiritual development or lack thereof. The higher the plane, the greater the expansion of consciousness.

The morally corrupt cannot expand beyond the first plane. The second plane is also considered to be a hellish place. The third plane is where most souls go; to a dimension of energy just below that of basic spirituality. The fourth plane is where all the religious heavens are located, i.e., the large communities of basically spiritual people. The fifth plane houses those who are in-between being part of the traditional religious mindset and becoming saints. The sixth and seventh planes are where saintly spirits reside who generally strive to become A Light Unto Oneself.

From a Christian point of view: In John chapter 11, there is an account of one of Jesus' close friends, named Lazarus, that had died. In verse 11 he compared his death to falling asleep. Jesus made his way to Lazarus' tomb where he had been for dead for 4 days (Verse 39). Jesus then instructed them to remove the stone door or the tomb and he resurrected Lazarus. (Verses 41-44)

According to the Bible, when we die, we don't go anywhere unless we are resurrected to either heaven or in the future on Earth after God's Kingdom has taken over the Earth. Ecclesiastes 9:4-10 says that the dead are unconscious and unaware of anything. That certainly fits with the way Jesus described Lazarus' state of sleeping.

The Apostle Paul mentioned the Earthly resurrection at Acts 24:15 - "And I have hope toward God, which hope these men also look forward to, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous."

The Bible also talks about a heavenly resurrection at Revelation 20:4-6 in which selected individuals would rule with Christ in heaven over the Earth for a thousand years and be part of that Kingdom.

After death a person returns to the cycle of carbon, nitrogen and other component elements. The personality or existence does not transcend death and stops like the light from a broken lightbulb.

This depends on which religion you belong to. For example, if you are a Christian you might go to heaven or hell, although there is one ambiguous view that this outcome awaits the Day of Judgement. Catholics are Christians, but thy also believe that many souls ultimately destined for heaven go first to a place or state called purgatory. Some eastern religions believe you are reincarnated after death.

Others say there is no afterlife. They say enjoy this life and do whatever good you are able, as this is the only chance we have.

Don't you know where a man goes after death? Don’t you see that the body is either cremated or is buried? Therefore, the body that was alive returns to dust. The question is - where did the one who was alive go after death? He is not a man or woman, he is the life, the energy, the Spirit, the Atman or the Soul. Where does that go after death? To understand this, take a balloon and fill it with air. Then burst the balloon. Where does the air go after the bursting of the balloon? It merges with the air that is everywhere. So does the Spirit or the Soul: it merges with the supreme Soul. However the one who was alive does not realize this, therefore, due to our ignorance, the Mind and the Ego, the ME, it takes another life with its pending actions or Karma to settle the same. Therefore, at death one of two things can happen: if we are not aware of the truth, we will probably be reborn on earth and experience heaven or hell right here, but if we realize the Truth, then we will be liberated and unite with the Divine.
