If the disposal is connected to a sink drain, and the majority of disposals are so connected, the "stuff" is sent down the drainpipe to the sewer, to be later filtered out of the water at the sewage treatment plant. Where the drain does not connect to a sewer, but instead connects to a septic tank (used in most rural areas), the "stuff" ends up in the septic tank.

When you run solids through the garbage disposal attached to your sink, the solids are ground up so they can be easily rinsed down the drain and out to your sewer line or septic tank just like the dishwater you drain from your sink. It's that easy!

The system is quite complicated. After you toss it out it goes to different places depending on the material. Those three places are:

1) Landfills, or rubbish dump, is where most garbage is thrown out. They are very destructive to our our planet, as it destroys our ozone.

2) Incinerators obviously, burn things. That means they cannot be retrieved. They are incredibly hurtful to Earth, because it causes so much smoke when used (Which is a lot).

3) The Ocean. This might be really hard to believe, but many countries share this enormous trashcan. Believe it or not, for some countries, this is all they trow in.

4) The possibilitys are infinite, but most of them are very hurtful to our planet. We need to help this. If you know what the three r's are, then, do them. It doesn't hurt to help our marvelous planet. The movie, Wall-E, starts with a huge pile of trash on Earth. That is supposed to be our future if we keep up this bad habit.

In conclusion, all the garbage goes to different places, landfills, the ocean, etc. Sometimes this is bad and WE NEED TO RECYCLE!
