However when teriyaki met chicken is up for some debate. Most in Japan use teriyaki with sea food. But in the west its more chicken and other meats.

Finding the exact answer may be difficult to find..
I believe China, but during WWII a Japanese pilot was nicknamed "chicken" for how good at dog fighting he was. His last name was teriyaki

Japan (although there are similar variants in Chinese and other Asian cookery). The sauce in this case defines the method, and is made from a thickened soy sauce that has been sweetened with sugar and Mirin.

Japan - Comes from Teri (Shiney Brown) and Yaki (means cook)

Teriyaki always has a nice deep brown sheen. :-) yum. OishiI
