The name felts come from the manufacturing process. When roofing felts were first developed they were made like a paper process. Cotton rags were pulped in a waterbased solution just like they way felts were made. The type of felts that are used on billiard tables. When the paper and rags were pulped the water was extracted leaving the "felt". These had very low tensile strength in both machine and non machine direction. About 2 lbs. Then fiberglass "felts" evolved. Initially they were made from continuous strands which made for a stronger tensil strength in the machine direction but poor strength in the non machine direction. About 20 years or more ago the fiberglas strands were cut to short pieces and floated to disperse all the directions which increased the tensil strength to about 60 lbs in type 6 felt and 44 lbs in type 4 felt. A huge improvement. Plus fiberglass doesn't wick moisture like the organic felt does this eliminating blistering and rotting. The old organic felts were very prone to splitting, blistering, deminsional stability issues and general decomposition. Fiber glass felts are much, much better today. Dan Hollland - Salt Lake City
