The name came from a town found in the Santillana, in the Cantabrian Mountains in Spain.

The history can be traced back from a knight named Don Sancho in the court of King Pelayo of Asturias. Don Sancho won many battles for the king during the age of the Reconquista and as a reward, the king married the knight to his daughter Infanta Iñiga of Asturias and their descendants took the name of the land which is Tagle. This origin is still shown in the Coat of Arms of the House of Tagle which says: "Tagle se llamó el que la sierpe mato y con la Infanta casó".

The House of Tagle was once one of the most important aristocratic family in Spain during the 17th, 18th and 19th and gained great wealth in the Spanish Colonies in America as well as in the Philippines. Some of the noble titles which the family held were:

  • Marquis of Altamira
  • Marquis of Sierra Nevada
  • Marquis of Las Salinas
  • Marquis of Torre Tagle
  • Marquis of Trujillo
  • Marquis of Villarias
  • Count of Casa Tagle de Trasierra
  • Count of Pestagua
  • Viscount Tagle
  • Prince Imperial of Mexico
  • Prince of Iturbide
  • Empress of Mexico

The direct family line still continues today in the family of the Duke of Tetuan which also holds the exalted dignity of a Grandee of Spain. The minor branches of the family still found on different countries such as Spain, the Latin Americas to the Philippines.

The surname Tagle is of Spanish origin. It is derived from the Spanish word "tagalo," which refers to the Tagalog people of the Philippines. This surname is commonly found in the Philippines and may have originated from the Spanish colonization period.
