I cannot verify this suggestion, but this is what my father said. It is of Norman origin. One of the entrances of a Norman castle was called a Loop-Gate. The original Lippitt's were the gate keepers of the Gate and the name evolved from Loopgate to Lippitt. Who knows if it's true. I can tell you that almost certainly the name originated in the Midlands of England. There are many more Lippitt's in the Midland compared to anywhere else. This is backed up by BDM's, telephone books etc. My Grandfather came from Worcester.
The name Lippitt comes from the Lippitt family of Rhode Island, who were known for breeding a specific line of Narragansett Pacer and Morgan horses. This bloodline, known as the "Lippitt Line," is highly regarded for its purity and historical significance in American horse breeding.
