Martin Luther, a German monk, created a new religion, called Lutheranism. Soon, Lutheran ideas spread around Europe. People all over Europe left the Roman Catholic Church and created their own Reformed Churches. Since Lutheran and Reformed Churches protested against the Catholic Churches, they were called Protestant Churches.

I believe it was because they were "protesting" against the Christian Church in Europe.

Not Christian church but Roman Catholic church.

The term Protestant is derived from the Latin protestari meaning publicly declare/protest which refers to the protest against some beliefs and practices of the early sixteenth century Catholic Church.

The term Protestant was not initially applied to the reformers, but later was used to describe all groups protesting Roman Catholic orthodoxy.

Since that time, the term Protestant has been used in many different senses, often as a general term merely to signify people who believe in Christ who worship outside the Roman Catholic or Orthodox churches.

They did not agree with the established religion (Catholics).

It got its name from the fact that it started as a movement protesting (the sixteenth-century Protestant Reformation) about the corruption in the Catholic Church. Protestantism is associated with the belief that The Bible (rather than church tradition or ecclesiastical interpretations of the Bible) is the final source of authority for all believers.

Martin Luther, a German Monk within the Roman Catholic Church during the 16th century, famously protested against many things done by the church by nailing a list of his objections on the cathedral door.

This was the start of the Reformation of the Church, that led to many break away religions, known as Protestant.
