The transmission fluid dipstick on a 1989 Mitsubishi Galant is next to the engine block. It is on the driver's side, near the rear of the engine.

Follow the top radiator hose back to the engine block. The thermostat is usually behind the housing that connects the radiator hose to the engine block. To be more specific Its on a housing on the passenger side of the engine block.

Block supposed to be 237lbs. fully dressed with no fluids almost 400lbs

the thermostat on your engine is not on the top of it, it is on the driver side of the engine block. ok?! peace out guys!
This is most lilkely the sound of one of the piston connecting rods trying to get out of the engine block. Give it some time and it will exit the block of its own accord. Seriously, get your car checked by a professional.
