A 1996 Ford Ranger will hold approximately 2.8 quarts of transmission fluid. The transmission fluid can be purchased at any auto parts store such as NAPA.
Allison Transynd
It's on top of the transaxle near the gearshift linkage. Can be seen plainly.

The fluid is added where the speedo cable and vehicle speed sensor enter the trans. These items are retained by a small bolt and clip.

Yes , on a 1996 Ford Taurus , the automatic transaxle ( transmission ) dipstick is near the firewall , where the transaxle is bolted to the rear of the engine , towards the drivers side of the vehicle
If your changing your filter, it should take 5 quarts. If it's completely empty, about ten.
